The violent tragedy got the
entire world cold at the eve of Christmas celebration,
took away with it the innocent and unsuspecting
people as victims and left behind large devastation,
extraordinary and inconceivable.
The tsunamis devastated the shores of Indonesia,
Sri Lanka, India, Thailand and other countries
with waves of up to 15 m in height. The earthquake
triggered massive tsunamis across southern coastline,
which stretches from Chile in Latin America
to Japan in East Asia.
The death toll from the earthquake, the tsunamis
and the resultant floods was reported to be
more than 150,000, with tens of thousands of
people reported missing, and over a million
left homeless and displaced.
Six days after the killer tsunami struck Andaman
and Nicobar, about 1,000 bodies are still reportedly
lying scattered on different islands, while
5,400 persons remained missing, more than 2,000
people may have been killed in India's Andaman
and Nicobar islands.
Now, matters are improving each day and physical
contact has been established with every inhabited
island. Relief agencies are struggling to rush
aid to more than 3 million people in Asia and
Africa after Sunday's disastrous earthquake
and tsunami waves.
India is entering into the new year with grief
untold for the loss of at least 25000. SriLanka
lost more than this number. We too are pained
but at the last days, these things are expected
to happen and it will continue to happen in
many new forms. The Word of God is proved eternally
true beyond all Sciences. The killer-tsunami
swallowed over 150,000 (if not more) in Asia
in couple of minutes. Eye-witness say that in
some places (like Nagapattinam in South India
where 7000 died,) only three waves came that
were high between 30-60 ft. and in no time sucked
everything on its way.
Andaman Nicobar Islands are badly hit with earth-quakes
as well as tsunami. Southern Islands like Car-Nicobar
& Great Nicobar are the most affected. I
served in these Islands for 6 years (1979-1984)
years as pioner missionary among the tribals.
Nicobar is about 20 hrs away of ship journey
from Port Blair (Capital) and it is a flat land
with full of Cocunut trees. May be now with
a population around 30 thousand. Most of them
are Nicobari tribes who happend to be christians-very
very nominal with out any Christian values or
much christian teaching. The church there never
allowed outsiders to stay among them or minister
to them. There were no trained pastors to lead
people into the truth. Geographically they were
isolated and much more than that they were isolated
from the other Indian Churches. Govt.regulations
supported the tribal's interest and under this
rule, they did not allow any mission to work
among them. As a missionary, I offered my service
in training young people and organising sunday
School work but the church leadership in those
days refused. I was told by my friends, that
the tidal wave have washed away half of the
Nicobari population. What a loss with out Christ?
Govt.says only 3000 dead there and but others
are "missing" since they could not
get their bodies. About 100 Defence ( Airforce
officeres) personals also died.
Remember, These are the signs of our Lord's
Second coming. we do not know when He comes
but we can be ready for His coming. While waiting,
let us do what the Lord has purposed for us.
Luke 2:74-75 Jesus Christ delivered us that
we " might serve him with out fear, in
holiness and righteousness before Him all the
days of our life." By this verse, I have
been challenged to rededicate my life .
We are very much concerned with Andaman island
people. The churches have been devastated and
missionaries who have left their home to gain
people for the kingdom of god have been struggling
without proper support.
Once the situation is stabilized, then the Church
and missionaries has to consider long term rehabilitation
which will be our top prority . Currently, we
are restoring communication links and their
condition in the islands. The Tsunami has left
shockwaves of fear, anxiety, stress and confusion
in the hearts and minds of the missionaries.
At this moment they need the help of people
who will listen to their plight, share comforting
words and encourage financially. They need to
be supported economically. They also need to
be reconnected to the immense spiritual resources,
from which they can draw energy to heal the
pain and suffering and to reawaken their lives
with renewed faith and hope.
