Family Fun

This is Steve with his Uncle Ken at the ole fishing hole behind Ken's house. At Stephen's funeral, Ken's wife Nancy commented about how Steve's favorite word was "awesome." Following is what she said.

When I think of Stephen, the words to the chorus "Our God is an Awesome God" come to mind:
Our God is an awesome God;
He reigns from heaven above.
With wisdom, power, and love
Our God is an awesome God!
Stephen liked to say the word "awesome." So one day I wrote down some of the verses in the Bible that used the word "awesome" to refer to God and gave it to Stephen.

  • Deuteronomy 7:21, "... for the Lord your God, the great and awesome God, is among you."
  • Psalm 65:5, "By awesome deeds in righteousness you will answer us, O God of our salvation ..."
  • Psalm 68:35, "O God, You are more awesome than Your holy places."
  • Psalm 99:2-3, "... He is high above all the peoples. Let them praise your great and awesome name ..."
Stephen loved to have fun. When Stephen was about four and a half years old he and his parents came to spend their vacation with us. We had taken them sightseeing. Apparently he wasn't having too much fun, because he kept saying to his cousin Cindy, "When we get home we are going to do the fun thing!" Throughout his life Stephen was known to ask, "Are we going to have any fun today?

Several years ago when Nan and Greg were in the process of moving from Florida to Tennessee, I was watching Stephen while Nan was out looking at houses. It had rained all morning, but Stephen kept asking to go fishing. I tried to entertain him with games and other things. Finally Stephen said, "You know Aunt Nancy, the fun thing to do at your house is to go fishing." So we put on our jackets and hats and got the fishing pole and went out to the creek bank to fish. After what seemed like about two hours in the rain, Stephen decided that the fish weren't biting. So looking for more fun, he decided to stick his arm in the water as far as he could and dig up mud from the bottom of the creek. He chose a tree stump as a target to throw the mud at, and I was the designated cheerleader to praise how close he came to the target. This mud-slinging went on for quite some time until the stump was no longer visible and there was just a pile of mud. Finally Stephen turned to me and said, "Aunt Nancy, do you want to have a turn at throwing some mud? I don't want to be the only one having any fun today."

It gives me great comfort to know today that Stephen is in heaven with an awesome God and to know that Jesus and Stephen are doing the "fun thing."
